That was the day. From that day forward, youth ministry was crippled.
Since then we’ve seen America’s young people, the Millennials, turn away from the church in record numbers. This generation has the highest incidence of non-belief. More than a third of Millennials now affiliate with no religious group.
When did this downturn begin? It was a couple of decades ago. At about the same time as that fateful day I mentioned. What happened on that day? Well, it was on that day that a youth pastor in a large, celebrity-driven church decided to rename his ministry. On that day, he changed “youth ministry” to “student ministry.”
Why? I’m not sure. It made no sense from a clarity perspective. The real world knows that “student” refers to anyone from kindergarten through graduate school and beyond. This guy’s youth ministry still encompassed only teenagers. And it included kids who had dropped out of school, and weren’t “students” anywhere.
But he insisted on calling them “students.” Even though they never referred to themselves with that label. No teenager ever said, “Hey, Mom, I’m going to Starbucks to hang out with some other students.”
But because this youth pastor was admired as a bigshot in the church world, hundreds of other youth ministers emulated his “student” labeling move. Now its usage has become widespread.
WORDS MATTER
What’s the big deal, you ask? In addition to “student ministry” being confusing and misleading, it telegraphs a misguided and stifling connotation. Using an academic term–student–defines this ministry as a schoolish routine for young people to come and sit passively while a teacher delivers a monologue. Rather than being a time to explore and develop a real relationship with the living God, it’s just one more classroom lesson.
It’s no wonder that sociologist Christian Smith, in his landmark study on the religious and spiritual lives of emerging adults, found that young people consider local churches merely “elementary schools of morals.” Young people have not only noticed what their church calls its ministry with them, they’ve seen that the centerpiece of this ministry is just another lecture about do’s and don’ts.
This pedantic approach has numbed a generation into conceding Christianity as mere dogma. More evidence of this was found in Group’s new survey of churchgoing teenagers. They were asked about the correctness of this statement: “Being a Christian is really about trying harder to be a better person.” Nearly 84 percent said this statement was always or sometimes true.
So, is that megachurch “student” ministry guy responsible for all these disappointing results? Is the relabeling of youth ministry to blame for setting adrift an entire generation? No, but the pervasive mentality behind the labels has indeed undermined youth ministry’s effectiveness. It has portrayed the Christian faith as an academic drill. It is not.
Our faith is more aptly described as a relationship. After all, we espouse a “personal relationship with Jesus Christ.” If it really is a relationship, why wouldn’t we set up an environment that looks more like one would use to pursue any friendship?
Christian Smith wrote in Group magazine: “Why should the church embrace the categories and vocabulary of our schooling society, with all its performance-based structures and practices? Calling teenagers students is a travesty that must stop.”
Rather than trying to manufacture more students of religion, it’s time to help the next generation become friends of God.
“So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.” (Romans 5:11 NLT)
Yea, the name ‘students’ can make youth group sound like a continuation of school which may not sit well in the mind. Just to be funny, use the term youth gang or youth mob. That might sound more appealing. For the church I was in, the downturn in youth numbers began to happen in 1982. As a child, church was always full of kids on Sunday mornings. Not so much Sunday evening and a bit more on Wednesdays. With ups and downs at the few churches I attended, the general direction is that the in church youth was dwindling.
Absolutely! I’m from the UK and there the word ‘student’ means college/Uni kid! They have kids, teens or youth ministry. When we were recently church hunting we came across this in several churches and it was so confusing.
Karen commented on Facebook: “As the mother of two millennials, I find the church behaving so negatively toward this population. My facebook feed sees a number of demeaning, “humorous” articles about millennials. I feel they are not treated respectfully, so why would they want to step into a church. I really struggle with sadness over this issue.”
We had a new youth director arrive in 2008 who referenced our youth as “students” and “student ministry,” and I remember thinking it felt odd and needlessly formal, but I kind of assumed he brought that language from the “Bible belt.”
Philip commented on Facebook: “I have never understood why we have to keep changing the labels…. Christian Education is now “Spiritual Formation,” Youth Ministry is now “Student Ministry.” Why?”
I thought when God and bible were taken out of schools is the time the rain started beating us
Yes to youth ministry! However, I grew up in a church that called it Walther League. I have remained connected to the church and not severely damaged in my spiritual development. Thanks for the work of Group, Thom, Joani, Rick and crew for being partners with youth leaders.
Ha, Bill! “Walther League” forever defined youth ministry as peculiar.
Having been a youth pastor for twenty four years I can honestly say that this is one of the dumbest comments I have ever read. Changing from ‘Youth’ to ‘Student’ ministry’ was certainly not the day that youth ministry was disabled.
We are still calling our program, “Youth” and/or kid’s ministry. However, our numbers have dwindled down so much so that it is hard to have a “program” with one child present. (Calling it a program may be part of the problem). Younger parents, as well as children themselves have said to me that they go to school all week long, why would they want to sit through another class on Sundays, or Wednesday evenings? Even if we are not calling it a student ministry, we are still conducting it as such. Time for a change? I think so! Thanks for a great topic, Mr. Schultz, and thank you for “Holy Soup”. I always look forward to it!
Do we want to get our youth’s attention? The answer is yes.
But how do we do it?
Gear our youth services to music that wounds like the music they listen to on secular radio?
Allow things that were once taboo, be allowed to be entertained in the church.
Oh no, not again, you say. Here comes a person that doesn’t understand young people. An old timer. Can’t trust them. They are out of touch.
Something is not working, the attendance keeps dwindling.
We may have a big crowd on Sunday morning, but a lot of churches have got to the place they have only one service a week. Not enough people attend on Sunday night or Wednesday to keep our churches open on those nights.
Some members do take it on themselves to have Bible Studies in their homes or other places.
But something is missing.. WHAT IS IT? Does anyone dare to say what it is?
Well we need people who will go out and clothe and feed the poor and homeless. Yes that is good and that is needed, but that is not working, because we have a society who are leeches and take what ever you give them and not worry about going to church. But doesn’t secular society feed and clothe the poor.
What is it that the church can do differently that will make a difference?
BACK TO THE BASICS—BACK TO THE BIBLE
The cause and cure for our failing ministries is in the following verse from Jeremiah.
Jeremiah 6:15-17King James Version (KJV)
15 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the Lord.
16 Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.
17 Also I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hearken.
I am not going to give a long discourse, but you can see what has happened to our churches is what happened to Israel.
Let’s go a little farther.
1 Corinthians 2:1-5King James Version (KJV)
2 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.
2 For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.
4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
2 Corinthians 4:2King James Version (KJV)
2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.
What’s in these verses that is not in most churches?
We have people talking with excellency of speech and trying to motivate people with psychological wisdom of this world.
Have you found it yet? Well I will will tell you.
It is THE DEMONSTRATION PF THE HOLY SPIRIT AND OF POWER.
Oh but those things have past. Look at the shape of our churches. For the most part the churches in America hasn’t see the demonstration of the the power of the Holy Spirit for decades.
Mark 16:15-20King James Version (KJV)
15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.
If you have the manifestation and the demonstration of the Holy spirit your churches will groow and it will get the youth’s attention.
ARE WE WILLING TO PAY THE PRICE?
I stated laughing after something to the affect of “nobody tells thier folks that I am going to Starbucks to hang out with students”
Nobody says they are going to Starbucks to hang out with other youth either.
The problem is that people today are post-modern and reject absolute truths, so they really reject the absolute truths that Jesus laid out for us in the Bible. John 1:1 says In beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Plus in John 14:6 Jesus said He was the way, the TRUTH and the life and no man comes to the Father but through Me. That verse alone is enough to make a post-modern person to enter into rage and need a safe place. But we PREACH anyway because “the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” I Cor 1:18
My question is why do people hate doctorine and being dogmatic about Truth in the preaching? 4 Timothy 2 gives us a reason.
2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
So whatever label you put on yourself Millineals, Baby Boomers, etc.
We need to remember what Paul told the Colossians in chapter 2 verse 8 over what we learned hanging out at Starbucks.
Beware lest any man rob you by philosophy, or by empty deception, according to the teaching of men and according to the principles of the world and not according to Christ.
How do you show a person the TRUTH, when they will not listen to anyone who disagrees with them. Isn’t that one of the trait of the youth today. Just look at the protests in the streets.
The man of God preaching the word of God so that the Spirit of God can open eyes, and quiet all arguments
How much of this angst about the Millennials is the about old guard wondering where the tithes are going to come from to maintain their status quo. Their degree in Divinity may not be worth the paper it’s written on, in the future. The loss of personal power and status can be very painful. If you sit done and really listen to the Millennials, you will find they are being led out of the Church by Truth from the Holy Spirit.
Wayne:
Really:
Where are the signs and manifestations of the them being led by the Holy Spirit.
Larger churches are not a sign Man can motivate people to follow themselves?
Feeding the poor. We have man made organizations that do that. That is not a sign.
Loving the people. Man loves people too. That is not a sign.
No matter what you may say, the younger are to taught by the previous generations. A new vision or revelation is not always the right thing.
When was the last time you seen a person with an addiction delivered by the power of the Holy Ghost instantly without counseling? Have you ever seen it. Has the younger generation ever seen it?
When was the last time you seen a person healed from cancer without surgery or medicine?
When was the last time that you seen a demon possessed personed delivered from the powers of Satan instantly?
You say that is fanatical?
That is what Jesus did? That is what he told His disciples to do and teach all men to do?
You believe in discipleship? Why aren’t you following the ultimate Disciple example.
Jesus didn’t beg for food, clothes and supplies to meet the peoples needs.
Jesus prayed to the Father and multiplied what they had or caused a fish to pay the tax bill.
I know people who didn’t have groceries, but would pray and people would leave groceries on their doorsteps. They didn’t beg and plead for ministries to support our missions.
The new generation does not want to have church twice on Sunday and maybe none through the week. One time is enough for them? Who are they serving? Who is their Master?
Judges 2:9-11King James Version (KJV)
9 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathheres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash.
10 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.
11 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim:
IS THIS GENERATION SERVING BAALIM, BUT THEY THINK THEY ARE SERVING JESUS CHRIST.
This isn’t about power or control in the church. This isn’t about the tithes in church.
If it is, then answer me this question. WHY DOES THE NEW GENERATION WANT TO COME IN AN CHANGE THINGS IN A CONGREGATION, INSTEAD OF STARTING A NEW CONGREGATION? Could it be they are not willing to sacrifice their means as their ancestors didi to start a new work?
Just answer these questions that has been presented instead of going off on some tangient.
Something to think about.
THIS GENERATION SERVING BAALIM, BUT THEY THINK THEY ARE SERVING JESUS CHRIST. No Scotty they are not, It was the likes of Jimmy Swaggert , Jim Bakker, Ted Haggert the list goes on right up to today , practically the entire charismatic movement served Baalim. Today there are many spin offs from that original and false so called spirit-filled movement that sold itself out to Baalim, ie. neo calvinism, prosperity gospel, mega Church movement to evangelicals voting for Trump. The first deal done with the devil was done by the charismatics , decades ago, that set the course for the failures of today’s Church. The millennials see this and are doing something about it. I suggest you sit down and listen to them.
There were and has always been those that sold out to Baalim and Molech and people are still selling out to Baalim and Molech. You have mentioned those who have failed. There are a lot of those in the previous generations that have not sold out to Baalim and Molech.
Yes I agree that the Charismatics caused and continue to cause great harm. There are charlatans out there and will continue to be and I believe there are charlatans out there trying to lead this generation astray The younger are supposed to learn from their elders. Not the younger teach the elders.
I am a third generation Pentecostal. My Grandfather, Father and Mother were all Assembly of God ministers. We have seen the real thing and we were called legalists, fanatics and etc.
I know the real thing and the things that you see on Christian television for the most part it is not real.
I was raised with our family sitting in the services from the youngest to the oldest experiencing the moving of the Spirit of God. We did not go to children’s church. We were in the adult services and experienced the Power of God.
Study & dissect the following scripture and ask yourself what is the demonstration of the Power of the Spirit?
1 Corinthians 2:3-9King James Version (KJV)
3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.
4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
6 Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:
7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

I am concerned about this generation because they have not seen True Power of God in operation.
God bless you

The Pentecostal movement of western Christianity has no relationship to the Pentecostalism described in the Bible.
Why not? explain?
Hi Brother, I being a Charismatic was also once concerned about this generation because they have not seen True Power of God in operation. I even have the gifts of the Holy Spirit working signs and wonders in me. But after 10 years later I found out that the doctrines I was taught (by Peter Wagner, Benny Hins, etc.) are full of heresies. I later found out that in the Baptist’s and other ministries, they also have signs and wonders.
Speaking in tongues is Not a must (which we teach is a must) for one to be baptized in the Holy Spirit. Those who do not speak in tongues are also Holy Spirit filled. I found out that the Charismatic way of Speaking in tongues are actually false tongues even though it did not affect the majority of us. It affected some as I saw the Snake-like tongue manifested out of a sister. There are many bizarre manifestations in each meeting when we (20 persons) speak in such tongues (very long time). Every time it is the same persons with the same bizarre manifestations and I deduce that it is not the Holy Spirit working in them as they cannot be set free after one year. Some other spirits is keeping them bondage.
The bizarre manifestations of Canada Toronto Blessing is evident.
Thank you for your comments.
I do agree there are counterfeits and many things go under the disguise of the Holy Spirit that I do disagree with.
But you must remember it was the religious leaders that question the ministry of Jesus Christ and the Baptism in the Holy Ghost in the early days in Acts.
While I do agree there are some fine Christian people who worship God with all their heart and are saved. I do not discount that.
But I do question them being filled with the Baptism of the Holy Ghost, if they do not speak with tongues. I believe it is the initial evidence.
What is a sign and wonder? How do you know you have received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
One thing that is taught even in the Charismatic circles that I disagree with is that Physicians have the gifts of healing.
I disagree. Why because no where in the Bible do you hear of God removing a part of an human being to heal them.
No where do you hear of God using a drug to cover up the pain.
While I do believe that God has created man with ability of each one to have talents to help the human race and to learn them.
But the gifts of healing are not learned by man, because that is man’s wisdom and man’s wisdom is not God’s wisdom.
The gifts of healing are supernatural, not natural.
So what that has been attributed to God sometimes in this area, is not necessarily so.
God bless you.
Pretty sure God has no grandchildren. There are a lot of people out there that know the Bible inside and out (Satan does for sure.) but are not saved…when did become the only one to be able to decide who and who is not saved?
What did you mean by this statement. I never said anybody wasn’t saved.
A quote from one of your replies (when did become the only one to be able to decide who and who is not saved?)
This is a totally different world now with all this social media. I mean when I was a kid, no one had computers and internet so church was where you went to hang out with some of your friends. I even looked forward to Sunday’s and Wednesdays at the Baptist church I was going to as a teen just to see and spend time with my friends there. Even later, I went to church to get out of the house to be with other people. Now, with texting, chat and emails, you don’t have to go anywhere to see anyone. At work, now, I message people two cubicals away. I can just discuss work back and forth on lotus notes same time with my Mexican counter parts. It beats calling on the phone because some in Mexico are difficult to understand. When they message, I hear them in my own voice in my head, ha, ha, no Spanish accent. I’m sure I would message my China counterparts if they weren’t sleeping all day, my time here. I think the only thing that gets teens physically together anymore is school sports.
[…] The Day That Disabled Our Youth Ministry […]
In response to SCOTTY SEARAN ;
1) ” But I do question them being filled with the Baptism of the Holy Ghost, if they do not speak with tongues. I believe it is the initial evidence.”
* Tongues is an evident but Not a Must to be filled with the Baptism of the Holy Ghost.
No man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
1 Cor 12:3 – Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
Not all speak with tongues.
1 Cor 12:30 – Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
Whether there be tongues, they shall cease;
1 Cor 13:8 – Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
2) How do you know you have received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
* It is evident that We who are filled with the Baptism of the Holy Ghost are truly born-again and walking in the Spirit will obey the Law of God.
Walking in the flesh one will surely sin against the law of God. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be (Romans 8 : 7).
* In the New Covenant for Jews and Gentiles, God (by Jesus) will put His laws into our mind, and write them in our hearts so that we will obey them with the help of the Holy Spirit, In Order That the righteousness of the LAW might be Fulfilled in US, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. So it is also We with the help of the Holy Spirit who enable us to obey the LAW that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us as the evident of our Faith in Christ.
Romans 8 : 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (1) There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
3) What is a sign and wonder?
* Signs and wonders come from God but False Signs and wonders come from Satan.
We test them (results fruitful or not) and we must check with the bible for proof discretion.
A lot of people say Jesus is Lord.
Paul did say that tongues would cease, but he didn’t say when.
If tongues has ceased, then prophecies have ceased also. Preaching is considered a type of prophecy. None of the other Gifts of the Spirit are working either.
Nowhere do you see where that people received the Baptism of the Holy Ghost without speaking in tongues.
But I did not say that a person wasn’t save if they did not have the baptism of the Holy Ghost.
We can debate this subject and get no where.
You did say that you received the baptism of the Holy Ghost, if I’m not mistaken with the evidence of speaking in another language..
I also know a lot of good Christian people that do not have the baptism. But I feel they would benefit if they had the Baptism, because it is a gift and you will know when you receive it.
I wasn’t speaking in tongues when I was first filled with the Holy Spirit.
I only received the gift of tongues later when I went to China on a mission trip.
I have many baptist church friends who are born again though they do not speak in tongues.
I know them well and they godly and they have a good testimonies in their lives.
